Ingredients

  • 300g (1 ½ cup) red lentils
  • 1 red onion peeled
  • 2 small carrots peeled
  • 1 potato
  • water to cover
  • salt to taste

For the mixture:

  • 90g (¾ cup) breadcrumbs (Add more if needed)
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ bunch fresh parsley finely chopped
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • chili flakes optional

Instructions

  • Cook the Lentils and Vegetables: Add the rinsed red lentils, onion, carrots, and potato to a pot with water and salt. Cook until everything is very soft and tender.
  • Mash and Cool: Drain any excess liquid, then mash the mixture until smooth. Let it cool completely before moving on—this is key for the right texture.
  • Build the Patty Mixture: Transfer the cooled mash to a bowl. Add the egg, spices, chopped parsley, and breadcrumbs. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is firm and holds together easily.
  • Shape the Patties: Use your hands to form evenly sized patties. They should feel soft but stable, not sticky.
  • Fry Until Golden: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry the patties until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Remove and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
